Time Card Calculator Hours And Minutes
Payroll wants decimals, but people think in hours and minutes. This time card calculator shows totals in h:mm first — 8:30 rather than 8.5 — and converts to decimal with one click. Enter your daily times and breaks and read both formats side by side under the table.

How to use this time card calculator hours and minutes
Enter clock-in and clock-out times for each day of the week. Overnight shifts are handled automatically — clocking out earlier than you clocked in rolls the shift into the next day.
Enter unpaid break or lunch minutes for each day, or tick “Breaks are paid” to keep them in the total.
Optionally choose an overtime rule (40h/week federal or California daily rules) and enter an hourly rate to see gross pay.
Read each day's total in the right-hand column and the grand total below the table, in h:mm or decimal hours.
Frequently asked questions
Why does 8:30 equal 8.50 and not 8.30?
The minutes portion is out of 60, not 100. 30 minutes is 30/60 = 0.50 of an hour, so 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.50 in decimal. Mixing this up is the most common payroll math error.
How do I add hours and minutes together?
Add minutes first, carry each full 60 minutes into the hours, then add hours. The calculator does this across all days automatically.
Can I switch between h:mm and decimal?
Yes — use the “Show totals as” toggle above the table. Both formats always appear with the grand total.
